Susan Lascelles is an amazing abstract/nonobjective visual artist concentrating in painting and drawing. She first lived in Switzerland in 1976 when she worked for The Swiss Student Travel Service in Davos Switzerland. She went on to herd Sheep in Canton Graubundin for 2 seasons.
After 2 seasons working on the Alp as a shepherd she Returned home to start a stained glass business for her parents small custom Draperies and decorating business. She created many works In stained glass both abstract and traditional stained glass commissions. In 1982 she returned to Switzerland to herd cows with Christian Candrian a Swiss man and good friend.
With the money she made as an assistant cow herder she traveled in Europe and spent the fall and early Winter in Greece, mainly on the Island of Crete. During this period she briefly camped in two caves in the hills above Matala in the remains of The Minoan Civilization. The views were stupendous and she awoke each morning to goat bells above her in time to enjoy the sunrise over a small island off the coast of Matala. To save money she left her camera in the safekeeping of a friend in Switzerland. She has extensive photo documentation of her Alp experiences with sheep and Swiss Cows. Although there were many incredible photo opportunities in Greece this decision actually freed her up to experience life immersed in the culture rather than constantly snapping photographs.
She moved to another village on the south side of Crete where she began playing her violin in a taverna with an elderly Greek man. This Agape relationship lasted into the Winter while she sought to study Greek Folk music with her Agape friend Andoni. When it got cold in Winter She traveled to Israel with her faithful American boyfriend who met up with her in Athens and lived on a Kibbutz for 6 months. When it got to hot in Israel she took (with a group of 8 friends) the second bus from Tel Aviv to Cairo after Israel returned the Sinai to Egypt. After a fascinating month in Egypt she returned to Switzerland in the summer and began work on a large scale stained glass commission in Hallau, Switzerland. She titled the 2 stained glass murals “ Eros and Thanatos” After completing the commission she returned to the United States in the fall of 1983.
She is thrilled to be included in this wonderful Swiss Gallery.
